Seasoned Ash Firewood

We are a small family business specialising in all aspects of tree care.

We have been providing firewood, tree surgery and forestry contracting services since 1994.

Firewood

Irish Oak, Ash, Beech, Birch and Sycamore logs have significantly higher energy content than softwoods at similar moisture levels providing longer, hotter burning. All our logs are supplied split to a maximum width of 10cm for efficient burning and can be provided in a variety of lengths.

Moisture content

Hardwoods generally have 10% lower natural moisture content than softwoods. However, the natural moisture content between 40% and 50% typically found in Irish hardwoods make them unsuitable for use as firewood without drying to between 25% or less.

Firewood with higher moisture content burns with much lower efficiency causing increased smoke pollution. The excess build-up of tar and soot caused by burning wet firewood can cause problems for stoves and chimneys and decrease the efficiency of gasification boilers.

Our natural drying process

Our seasoned firewood undergoes a unique drying process based on traditional techniques to ensure consistently dry and clean logs in every bag. We use a two phase process where the freshly harvested round timber is transported to our yard and split into billets of 10cm diameter which are stacked in a drying shed. The billets allow airflow over the split timber which accelerates the drying process.

Once the moisture content has been reduced the billets are sawn into various lengths as required to suit bags or bulk loads. We test our firewood to ensure final moisture content does not exceed 25%.

Our Kiln Dried Hardwood

Our Kiln Dried European firewood is offered with a moisture content of 20% or lower offering very efficient burning.

  • I purchased firewood from Fiachra to run a large gasification boiler. The low moisture content and quality of the timber is good, no tarring or sooting on boiler and good efficient burning.

  • I purchased a 6 six cubic metre load of firewood from Fiachra last year for my gasification boiler. It works much better than softwood and I will buy again.
